The team of Advanced Micro Devices, Sun Microsystems, and TACC is pleased to announce an upgrade to Ranger. All 15,744 AMD 2.0 GHz, quad-core processors (62,976 cores) are being replaced with 2.3 GHz processors. Upon completion, the upgraded system will provide the user community access to a resource with a theoretical peak performance of approximately 580 Teraflops.
This upgrade will be accomplished in phases; a small set of racks will be removed from the configuration and compute nodes upgraded while the remainder of the system remains in production. Following a re-qualification process, new processors will be placed in a special queue to which users will be given access. This approach will enable the processor replacement to take place with minimal impact to users.
On Saturday, June 14, at 8 a.m. (CDT) Ranger will be taken out of production to finalize the processor upgrade and to perform InfiniBand fabric maintenance. This activity will take approximately 48 hours to complete and the system will be placed back into production at 8 a.m. on Monday, June 16.
Please monitor TeraGrid User News for a detailed description of how to use the special queue and for updates on the progress of the upgrade.
